A surf forecast that says “3 feet” leaves out one of the most important variables: period. Wave period is the time in seconds between successive wave crests. It is also a useful clue to how organized and energetic the wave field may be.Short-period energy
Energy around four to six seconds is commonly associated with local or regional wind waves. The waves are closer together, the surface can feel crowded, and sets may lack the spacing of a mature swell. On the Southeast Coast, afternoon sea breezes frequently add this kind of short-period energy.
Mid-period swell
Roughly seven to nine seconds can produce useful surf, especially when direction and local wind cooperate. It is not automatically “good” or “bad.” Beach exposure, tide and sandbar shape can matter as much as another second or two of period.
Longer-period swell
Ten seconds and above generally indicates more organized energy. Tropical systems and distant weather can send longer-period swell toward the Southeast coast even when local winds are light. Longer period also means the waves interact with the bottom farther offshore as they approach shallow water, which can increase how strongly they respond to bathymetry.
Why equal heights do not mean equal surf
Three feet at five seconds and three feet at twelve seconds are different sea states. The longer-period event usually carries more organized energy and more spacing between waves. That does not guarantee better surfing: the swell may arrive from an unfavorable angle, the tide may be wrong for a shallow sandbar, or local winds may disrupt the face.
Read swell period with swell height
If a station reports a small long-period swell beneath larger short-period wind waves, the long-period component may still be the part surfers care about most. The SEC Wave Report highlights swell height, swell period and wind-wave energy separately when the station provides those values.
