A useful surf report is a decision tool, not a single wave-height number. Southeast Coast focuses on the combination of swell, wind, tide, water temperature, local exposure and hazards that determines whether a session fits your ability.
Choose by travel style
Swell height describes only part of the energy. Period matters because longer-period swell generally carries more energy and can feel larger at exposed breaks. Direction matters because coastline orientation determines how much of that swell reaches a beach.
Conditions shape the experience
Wind can improve or destroy surface quality. Light offshore wind often cleans up waves, while strong onshore wind can create chop. Local geography can bend or block wind, so use a nearby observation rather than a distant reading when possible.
Plan geographically
Tide changes depth over sandbars and around inlets. There is no universal “best tide” for every Southeast beach. Learn the specific break and watch how it changes through the tide cycle.
